"As lawyer, I swear to carry out my duty with dignity, consciously and independently, with integrity and humanity” Jean-Luc VIART october 7, 1992.

The oath taken by lawyers was first introduced by Philippe le Hardi in 1274. It had first a religious meaning but with the time, it became more and more political as it is a true declaration of independence from the public authorities.

By taking the oath, lawyers commit to abide by these moral values during all their professional life without any limitation.
The principles of honour, loyalty, fraternity, moderation and politeness are also included in the oath, although not specifically expressed during the oath ceremony.
